My ghost story

I think this story is told from generation to generation. And I heard it from my grandmother.
Long long time ago, there was a mountain called obasuteyama. And there was a family- grand parents, dad, mom, a boy child and a girl child. They lived happily at first and helped each other. But grandma was pretty old, so she became feebleminded with age. They thought it was common to old people, but they became disgusted at her, because she asked same thing over and over again and talked same story so many times. Then, they tried not to talk with her and go out with her. She became lonely and stopped moving around the house. One day, dad decided to take her to the mountain and leave her there. Then he said to her,
`'How about going on a picnic?''
She was so happy to talk to him after a long time silence and she was anxious to do something with them and said,
`' I'd love to do that. I will make a box lunch, so we can have it together''
`'Okay, let's do that on Friday which is 3 days after today'', he said.
On Friday, grandma got up early to make a box lunch and prepared for a picnic. Around 10 o'clock they left for the mountain. Since grandma was weak and couldn't walk fast, it took so long a time to climb up the mountain. But he took her to the higher place where she could not come home by herself. They had a box lunch there and talked together happily, because he knew it would be the last time talking to her. Then, when it became dark, he said good-bye to her and climbed down the mountain alone. She didn't realized what was happening and cried out, but he never looked back, so she realized that she was left behind. She cried out over and over again,
`' Please take me with you. I don't want to stay here by myself. I'd do what you want me to do. Please help me''
or things like that, but he never looked back again. He felt sorry for doing that little bit, but it relieved his anxiety.
From that day, they lived happily but when they passed the mountain where they left grandma, it is said that they heard a scream and when they passed it at night, they always saw a ghost that was white and looked like it was saying or appealing something. Also they were always bound hand and foot at night when they passed it. That story was told from people to people and they got scared and no one wouldn't leave old woman at the mountain again.
I also heard that when we passed obasuteyama, we have to put our thumbs with our other fingers. If we don't do that, it is said that a ghost would seize us with fear and it is also said that we would lose our parents earlier. But nobody knows about it for sure...

I enjoyed your story!!I've heard "obasuteyama" ever, but I didn't know the story. I was happy to understand it in English. Moreover, I read it at midnight, so I was a little exciteing. In the story, it was sorrowful that husband could give up his wife. The family was distressed by grandma, but they should have taken care of her more as long as her life was lasting. If they did, grandma would not scare her family. By the way, the thing which we must put our thumbs with our other fingers in front of something is famous, isn't it? I often do that when an ambulance passes or in front of tombs even now.It maybe derives from "obasuteyama". I don't want to be obsessed with ghosts, so I'll continue that from now on, too!
