Last Thursday, I had a presentation about surnames for married couples. I'd like to introduce part of it.
In Japan, when a couple gets married, husband or wife has to change his or her family name. It makes most of people realize marriage, they often feel "Yeah! I've got married."

However, some people, especially women who are active in business, don't do so for some reason. One of the reasons is troublesome. If a person changes family name, he or she has to change personal seal, driver's lisence...and a lot of things. It is a lot of trouble. Let me give you another example about problem. If a person who is active in business changes family name, it causes confusion to around people. For example, a woman got married and changed her family name after working ten years. However, people outside the company don't know it. So when such people call the company, "May I speak to ~(previous name)?". But recruit doesn't know her previous name, so he said,"There is no ~ in our office." It's serious problem for the company.
Because of the choice of surnames for married couple isn't accepted in Japan, people who don't want to change family name aren't protected in law. Some couple even get divorced on their family resistration to use different family name.
If she use her previous name in business, is seems to solve problem. However, 70% of companies in Japan prohibit it. Like this, not only law but also companies stick to sharing names.
I don't think using same family name is wrong. I think present situation "same family name is forced" is wrong. Each person has each opinion, and now, the way of thinking is more and more diversity. So we cannot it unified one. Based on these reasons, I think a choice of surnames for married couples should be adopted in Japan.

It's summary of my presentation. I'd like to know your opinion as much as possible.

Wow! I am so shocked that most companies prohibit women from using their original family names. That seems so unfair. I guess that is one more reason why my wife likes her company: they let her do as she likes.

Yes, it's true. 70% of companies in Japan prohibit women to use previous name. Does your wife work at the company which allow women to use previous name? That's nice. Searching other countries' data, it is only Japan that sharing surname is forced among developed countries.

Symbol of marriage ( Comment #4)

I think changing surname is like a symbol of marriage, so I don't mind changing. like you said, it will make us feel "yeah! I've got married!" But, it was regrettable fact that most companies prohibit to use previous surname. Both surnames, one from their own family and the one from their partner, are their surname so they should allow using it.

I didn't know such a fact. I think so too. A choice of surnames is needed for married couple. In fact, I use my surname a lot. Many people around us call me with using my surname. So I don't want change my surname when I got married.
But, if my father and mother have different surname, I don't feel good. So it is very difficult question, I think...
